Breeding Synchrony In Colonial Birds

The model observes how reciprocal modulation of stress levels between neighboring birds can result in breeding synchrony within bird colonies.

The model observes how reciprocal modulation of stress levels between neighboring birds can result in breeding synchrony within bird colonies.

At every time step, bird agents update their stress level according to its current stress as well as that of its neighbors. If a bird’s stress level dips below a certain threshold, then the bird will deem the environment to be tranquil and lay their egg. This is represented by setting their stress to 0 and setting the agent’s height and color proportional to when they laid their egg.
